I had to visit Hutcliffe Wood Crematorium back in 1993 when me and my wife paid the crematorium staff a visit. I was told by a friend of my father's that my father had been cremated a week before I visited it. So I had to see the staff to see if it was true as I was told by my father's lady friend that my father had passed away 3 months previous. The staff in the crematorium office was brilliant in finding out the information I needed. I saw my father's name on the top page on the day of his cremation he was to be cremated at 09:00am. I wanted to go sit in the room where they do the service for the funeral but I couldn't as there was a service going on. The staff told me to go behind the crematorium office outside and say bye to my father it was not the same as if I could have sat in the room where his coffin would have been for his service I could have pictured it sat waiting for the curtains to close round my father's coffin. I could have then whispered bye dad but I still broke down in tears knowing that I never got the chance to put my hand on his coffin before he went on his journey and say goodbye to him. Thank you Hutcliffe Wood Crematorium staff for making my father's journey a safe one. I just wish I could have been at his funeral, my wife had to help me out as I was that upset over this.

Every year this place gets worse . The plaque situation is disgusting ! We go to visit my mum 3 times a year and every time we go there are more empty spaces on the curds . Why remove plaques when you don’t need the space even if people have not paid to renew the lease . There is so many large gaps now Having visited today we had a walk round only to find plaques thrown on the grass & just laid on the pavement having been remove or fallen off I don’t know . How disrespectful is it that these plaques are not reattached to the curbs . If we have seen them then the ground keepers have seen them & just not bothered to sort them out . I’m going to call the council to complain about this situation as it is not good enough . It used to be a pleasure to come visit the garden of remembrance but these days it’s actually annoying to see how it’s not being looked after properly

The Google Map directions aren't too clever for public transport/pedestrians coming in from the Chesterfield Road/Abbey Lane end. There is a 76/76A bus stop directly opposite the entrance to the old Abbey Lane crematorium, and going back to town from the crem side of the road. Once you're in the cemetery, just follow the coffin road until you can join a tarmac path heading right. Follow that, & keep an eye out for a small cluster of modern buildings uphill and to your left. That cluster of buildings is Hutcliffe Wood crematorium, it's basically an add-on for Abbey Lane cemetery. Walking time from the Abbey Lane bus stop should be around 10 minutes, but allow longer if walking uphill is a problem to you! Nice spot though, peaceful.

Ground staff don't care throw your flowers on the walk way when cutting grass etc and do. Not put back which die due to no water also do not grit the paths when ice. Or snow The flag stones are very slippery when wet First photo of flowers I left for my wife. Other photos when I returned flowers thrown on walk way butterfly light broken I had 50 great years married ground staff show no respect or care The paths are littered with dead flowers Wished I had never used this place
