Stephen Hill Monumental Mason

Stephen Hill Memorials is an independent family run business. It has been providing hand crafted memorials for over 35 years. The company offers individual churchyard and cemetery designs, hand cut lettering, cremation interment arrangements, and temporary crosses and memorial caskets. It advises on church or council memorial regulations and handles the paperwork.

Memorial maintenance services include re-gilding or re-enamelling inscriptions or designs, levelling, cleaning, re-polishing, adding to or changing inscriptions. The Nuneaton office closed in January 2017 after being based there for 25 years. Stephen Hill Memorials continues to serve Nuneaton families from its Coventry office, including new memorials, restoration work and adding inscriptions to existing memorials.

Workmanship on memorials, from fresh inscriptions to the restoration of older stones, is the theme that runs through the accounts left for this Coventry monumental mason. Customers describe stones that were removed, re-lettered and returned to the grave looking renewed, with one family noting a headstone that had stood for decades being brought back to an appearance they had not expected to see again.

Matching an existing typeface on an older memorial is mentioned as something that had been turned down elsewhere but was carried out here, and the finished lettering is repeatedly described as beautifully cut and carefully matched. The advice given while arrangements are made features in several accounts, with Jacqui and Stephen named for explaining options, answering questions patiently and adjusting designs without fuss, including when families return with changes.

Reviewers note that the process was made straightforward at an emotional time, with sensitivity shown throughout, and that the completed memorial was placed back on the grave as agreed. Tidiness and speed are also remarked upon, along with the care taken over existing stones. Granite and stone refurbishment, additional wording and the safe re-fixing of monuments are among the jobs described, and one customer mentions work on kitchen worktops.
