Manchester Southern Cemetery holds a 4.2 rating from 113 Google reviews. Visitors often describe a peaceful, historically significant site, home to notable graves including Sir Matt Busby and L. S. Lowry, along with a war memorial and helpful staff. However, a recurring concern among reviewers is inconsistent grounds maintenance, with several mentioning overgrown grass, sinking graves and disturbance to neighbouring plots during new burials, so families may wish to raise any specific concerns directly with the cemetery in advance.

4.2 / 5 · 113 totalIt needs maintaining ,very mudding kept poorly the council are responsibilities for a grave yard its not good at all compared to the value cemetery in Luton they cut the grass and clean up the grave yard.Thank you for putting flowers on my sons grave staff seem friendly and nice thank you
Waited over a week for them to say they will not work on the stone they made tried to lie and say they haven’t got the manpower for it even though it’s over 2 weeks away for the funeral then said actually it’s because I complained previously in the past with how they treated 2 stones that they did in the past basically never complain and be happy with the job always because soon as you mention any fault it’s a problem
A big thank you to Carl, Cliff, David and Elliott. In my saddest days you were there with the most helpful and considerate manner. You all do an amazing job, I am very grateful!
The grounds are poorly maintained, except for the historical graves where they win their awards. Overall, the upkeep of this cemetery is unacceptable. In every season it’s left in a neglected state—the grass isn’t cut, weeds are not removed, and fallen leaves are left untouched. Just look at Oak Avenue; it’s disgraceful. Any clean or tidy areas have been done by families, not by the groundskeepers. When new graves are being dug, they damage the surrounding graves just to get their equipment in. Every time someone is buried in the family plot next to ours, our own family grave ends up being disturbed and left in a mess. It’s incredibly disrespectful.
Lovely cemetery but the burial of Muslim people is disgraceful. All the graves keep sinking year after year. 2 of my family members are buried here and over 10/18 years and we are still filling the graves because of sinking. Something needs to be done.
Southern Cemetery. It's been some time since I did a graveyard walk and what better place than the beautiful Southern Cemetery. I was asked by someone to find a particular grave, that of an Irish Nurse how died serving the Red Cross in 1917 at the age of 23. Rest in Power Hilda Peare 🕊️
Situated just 10 min drive from the M56, we visited to pay our respects to the graves of Sir Matt Busby and L.S.Lowry while we were in Manchester. A huge peaceful cemetery that is well maintained, toilets and admin office are located at the south entry, use the grave finder website to locate the headstones. Over 347,000 memorials are located here, the site has an impressive war memorial and three chapels.
