What customers say

Based on genuine customer reviews

Southern Cemetery in Manchester is consistently described as peaceful, well-tended and attractive throughout the year, its mature trees and open lawns offering comfort to regular visitors. Several reviewers highlight the considerate support given by named staff, Carl, Cliff, David and Elliott, thanked for their sensitive manner during the most difficult times.

Practical help from cemetery employees, such as pointing out the direction of a family plot and assistance with an online grave search, is valued by those tracing relatives. The presence of notable memorials, a war memorial and three chapels lends a sense of history that visitors remark upon, and the crematorium itself receives appreciative mentions. A remembrance service is recalled as deeply moving, particularly for the involvement of local schoolchildren.

Planting and borders are admired for being kept in good order, with one family grave dating from the early 1960s noted as still looking sound. A recurring theme is how rapidly the cemetery has filled since the pandemic, a development that some visitors find troubling, and calls have been made for better upkeep of public facilities and for attention to headstones displaced by ground movement. The range of trees and the quiet atmosphere remain the most frequent points of praise.

Waited over a week for them to say they will not work on the stone they made tried to lie and say they haven’t got the manpower for it even though it’s over 2 weeks away for the funeral then said actually it’s because I complained previously in the past with how they treated 2 stones that they did in the past basically never complain and be happy with the job always because soon as you mention any fault it’s a problem

A big thank you to Carl, Cliff, David and Elliott. In my saddest days you were there with the most helpful and considerate manner. You all do an amazing job, I am very grateful!

The grounds are poorly maintained, except for the historical graves where they win their awards. Overall, the upkeep of this cemetery is unacceptable. In every season it’s left in a neglected state—the grass isn’t cut, weeds are not removed, and fallen leaves are left untouched. Just look at Oak Avenue; it’s disgraceful. Any clean or tidy areas have been done by families, not by the groundskeepers. When new graves are being dug, they damage the surrounding graves just to get their equipment in. Every time someone is buried in the family plot next to ours, our own family grave ends up being disturbed and left in a mess. It’s incredibly disrespectful.

Lovely cemetery but the burial of Muslim people is disgraceful. All the graves keep sinking year after year. 2 of my family members are buried here and over 10/18 years and we are still filling the graves because of sinking. Something needs to be done.

Southern Cemetery. It's been some time since I did a graveyard walk and what better place than the beautiful Southern Cemetery. I was asked by someone to find a particular grave, that of an Irish Nurse how died serving the Red Cross in 1917 at the age of 23. Rest in Power Hilda Peare 🕊️

Situated just 10 min drive from the M56, we visited to pay our respects to the graves of Sir Matt Busby and L.S.Lowry while we were in Manchester. A huge peaceful cemetery that is well maintained, toilets and admin office are located at the south entry, use the grave finder website to locate the headstones. Over 347,000 memorials are located here, the site has an impressive war memorial and three chapels.
